Judges comments: In this slashy retelling of Tarzan, we are along for the ride when William experiences falling in love with the jungle legend. Sexymermaid uses vivid imagery to create the lush jungle setting and steamy sexual encounters so that we experience what William does, and share his feelings as he discovers who he truly is.

A sweet story with dark undertones about ‘handicapped’ student William who meets the janitor and part-time boxer Liam. A wonderful story about how these two different people come together and learn more about each other and themselves.

Sexymermaid gives this story a fun twist when shy, studious William becomes the dominant lover of aspiring boxer and janitor Liam. Her Liam, despite his rough life and simple outlook, is a good, honest man who just wants to fall in love and be loved in return. William wants to be the man who loves him, but his powerful father is creating obstacles on their path toward happiness. Sexymermaid has created two vivid and endearing characters in Will and Liam, and you'll root for them as they square off against their detractors.

Sexymermaid turns her normal Spangel and Spander readers into fierce defenders of Riley in this story that starts out with some of the most divine erotica ever written, but quickly turns to a frightening tale of the sinister happenings that really went on behind the scenes of the Initiative.

This is so much more than a simple Xangelus story. It's more than slash, more than sex, more than love; it's a character study. This story literally breathes on its own. It's erotic, frightening, and surprisingly gentle. Why is it unique? Because even though it's an AU, it has the potentiality of being canon. Both Xander and Angelus are given thoughtful consideration, and their characters are never compromised for the sake of story. Xander is who he always was: lonely, scared, confused about his identity and his place in this world; the story simply serves as a platform to convey these emotions in a new arena. Angelus, too, remains faithful to what he is: a demon. There are no apologies, only discovery: that's he's something more, that someone can matter, that there is no weakness in love. Together, these two are formidable. Xander learns submission in the absence of fear, while Angelus learns acceptance tempered by love. Revelatory, delightful, and, at times, shattering, The Seduction is, quite simply, one of the best fics I've ever read.

He's almost at the gate when he hesitated and then ran back to me.

"Found this in your stream. River rock."

He handed me... a rock?

"See how it's all black? That's obsidian, but there's a pattern--like a flower? And that's raw quartz. If you put it under water, it sparkles in sunlight."

I look up, confused. Why is the boy giving me a rock from my own property?

"Quartz is like the... silver lining, see. Like, things get to be okay again sometime, you know? That's what that rock says."

What more can I say but this is so stunning, so touching, so just GUH that every time I read it it makes my heart swell and my stomach tighten into knots. I've read this story well...about 3 times so far and EVERY SINGLE time this chapter is what really drives home Xander and Spike's relationship.

The trust of Spike taking this small token from Xander, and Xander's pure untainted belief in Spike all wrapped up in a single solitary stone. The thought that, yes....everything can be that simple if only you bother to look around you and see past the rushing waters and turmoil of your life.

The silver linings are there. You just have to be able to see them.

Thank you so much for writing this fic. This bounty of hope, restitution, love and belief in human goodness and that a person can change, and can become more than what they thought, it only takes belief.

Not only well written, but also very well constructed. It is a favourite genre of fic of mine, the serial killer, and looking into his twisted thoughts. The relationship is complex and intriguing, with Liam only just coming to terms with his feelings for another man, Spike, but also giving into his protective side as well. Spike as the man-mad seducer is a joy.



Judge's Comment:

Xander's Beast by Sexymermaid is a perfect example of when erotica, characterization, and plot come together and render unto the readers something joyful and exciting. It is so easy for detractors of the genre to dismiss erotica as simply porn; what sets Sexymermaid above her peers and out-of-reach of her critics is that, while the sex is hot, it's based in true feeling, longing, and desire. This story is unique and beautiful, the characterization is exquisite, and the use of Cordelia as supporting and supportive is both true to her relationship with Xander and her character.



Judge's Comment:

A genuinely creepy horror fic that grabs you by the throat from the very first chapter. Another original undertaking with an all human AU where the human villain is creepier than some of the monsters in more conventional fics. It's both incredibly hot and terrifying in turns and every chapter poses as many questions as it answers. Can't wait to see where this one is going.










Judge's comment: Reading Kept is like watching a beautiful painting come to life. The colors and the detail glow and make you want to enter the world of the story and touch these characters. jans_intentions paints an exquisite picture of unlikely and unlooked for love against the horrors of a military controlled state. This may not be canon Spike and Xander, but against the strange exotic background of the story they still remain true to their fundamental natures as they struggle to live and learn to love. To anyone who is scared to try AU, I'd point them at Kept and tell them to read. Then dare them to tell me that I'm wrong.



Judge's comment: Why do I love this fic? Besides the fact that it's inspired me to do some of my best art work to date, it's just a spellbinding read. Taut and dark with hints of light and hope twined throughout, Man Hunter is an edge of your seat thrill-ride reminiscent of best sellers on the New York Times list. If you like suspense--which jans_intentions has down to a T--if you like UST (Spike and liam? need I say more? guh). If you like a little bloodbath with your morning tea? THIS is the fic for you!!! I highly recommend it, hell...I even gave it the award for best of the best!!!



Judge's Comment: In this slashy reimagining of Tarzan, jans_intentions tells the story of sickly and lonely William who finds love in the arms of his Wild Man. The background is lush and vivid and the characters are well-drawn in a tale that withstands many readings.



Judge's Comment: The Seduction by jans_intentions is one of the most moving pieces of fan fiction - or any fiction - I've ever read. It defies genre, character, convention - and even species! - and presents itself as intelligent, thoughtful, erotic, and romantic. Every word is carefully chosen, every sentence has nuance, and every character is afforded exploration and expiation.

Sexymermaid, best known and admired for her Spander and Spangel slash fics is also a thoroughly accomplished writer of a myriad of other pairings. Spawn, Spara, Xangel, even Wes/Spike, Giles/Xander are but a few of her tantalizing fics.

Best Author is not only an honor for writing, but for writing wonderful, intriguing, thoughtful, suspenseful, hot and all around reader enveloping fics. jans_intentions manages to encompass the emotion and depth of all her characters in a way that leaves the reader begging for more, and that's why she is our pick for best author this round.



Judge's Comment:

jans_intentions's Vietnam-era Spangel is absolutely compelling, heartbreaking, and joyful. A great deal of research has gone into this story of a Marine Corps officer and British reporter discovering love in a time of war. What began as a possible one- or two-shot piece has turned into something bigger and Sexy's fans are truly "Aching For" more of this luscious tale.



Judge's Comment:

Set during the Vietnam War era, Soapstone is a story that will make a Spangel heart soar with romance and tenderness. In an AU human setting, Captain Liam Roarke and Spike, a reporter covering the war, manage to find each other and remember their human feelings of love and desire. It's a story to truly reach the Spangel heart.



Judge's Comment:

What started out as a one-off holiday romance set against the backdrop of the Vietnam war, has now blossomed into a four part story, with the promise of more to come. I for one, certainly hope so.

Set in the steamy reaches of the Vietnam jungle, Captain Liam Roarke is a Marine on a mission. To do his duty for his country, and return home with honor. Little did he realize he would be blindsided by a British reporter going by the unlikely name of Spike.

The heat rises and the sheets get tangled in this one-of-a-kind fic, and jans_intentions takes the deep breath of the jungle in all it's dangerous beauty and weaves an intricate story of love found, lost, and remembered. And maybe...found again?



Judge's Comment:

Runaway came as a complete shock to me. I'd never even read it and I'm a huge fan of jans_intentions’s fics. So when I read this all the way through in one sitting, I just had to give it the win.

Not only is it drawn tight, scrape your nerves, make you chew your nails edgy, but it's hot as hell too. Ice water does NOTHING when reading this bit of naughtiness.

Xander and Dawn are on the run. The world is dark and forbidding and there are monsters that go bump in the night. Little does Xander know, he's about to meet two of the fiercest. Angel and the current master of the city, Spike.

What makes this fic a winner in the happy world of forbidden fics? Well all I gotta say to you is, shoe sex. Yep you read it here, and if you don't find this particular bit of naughtiness hotter than hell? Well folks, it's time to be gettin out the oatmeal and the geritol cause YOU are dead from the neck down!!!



Judge's Comment:

jans_intentions is rightly known as a great AU writer, but in Seven she tackles the bugbear of most fans – that last troublesome season, and she gives it a Spander makeover that the Fab Five would have been proud of. All the canon set pieces are there, but just with a little bit of a twist and the results make you wish that we’d seen this version on screen. Great writing, hot boys and storylines that make sense – what more could a girl ask for!



Judge's Comment:

Lush, gorgeous writing; innovative style and epic in scope; exquisitely drawn characters and impeccably plotted. Once again jans_intentions delivers an exceptional story.



Judge's Comment:

Xander Harris has always had secrets. Dark little things he keeps to himself. Things he can never share, but what happens when he finds himself in a place where he has to share? Or do unspeakable evil that he can never come back from?

This taut, edge of your seat redo of season Seven, jans_intentions has managed to capture the raw edge emotions of a man in turmoil and the people that surround him. But what is he to do when he comes face to face with the now be-souled and broken William the Bloody? Will love triumph over evil? Will he ever be the man everyone sees him as? Or is he on the road to hell and dragging everyone with him? Be sure to read this and find out, you won't be disappointed.





















Judge's comment: A whimsical but sensual tale of a Spike and Tara relationship had they never met in Sunnydale, but instead on an island they've been deserted on. Beautifully written from Tara's mindset, with twists and turns as they both realize they're more than meets the eye. Wonderfully written.



Judge's Comment: I chose a joint first because these two fics are both deservedly very popular, but they are both very different and show quite different aspects of our hero and heroine. Forbidden deftly presents a portrait of adolescent sexual awakening, and nicely depicts Spike’s self-doubt. Temptation takes the cliched naughty schoolgirl scenario and manages to do something new, witty and hot with it, whilst keeping the characterisation real.



Judge's comment: Another wonderfully written piece. Sexymermaid’s work is always worth the read and she won’t disappoint you with this one. It’s the story of what happens when sparks literally fly between Spike and Fred, with an original storyline. Spike and Fred’s journey starts with some flirting and experimenting and moves swiftly on from there, it’s hot and intriguing and the conclusion explaining the sparkage is unlike any other story I’ve read. Read it!



Judge's comment: Powerful story in such few words! Very well done!



Judges Comments: Manservant takes us through Spike’s transformation from an unwilling-Riley’s pet, unable to speak and not even resembling the Spike we know, to a shadow of canon-Spike’s brash self because he’s gone through so much that was never even imagined in canon. I like to think I’ve read most of Sexymermaid’s work, but for some reason I avoided this story until I was forced to read it to judge. As soon as I started reading, I got sucked in by a story that was disturbing and upsetting, forcing myself to continue after the first chapter when I was as disconcerted as Riley by the appearance of the naked vampire in his office, not because it isn’t a pretty sight, but because Spike wasn’t anything that Riley or I could find attractive: he was a beaten dog on a short leash in a doghouse he has soiled because nobody ever lets him out. But Riley feels sorry for the creature, who he can’t get out of his head, and I was drawn in as Riley helps Spike heal. The Initiative has a lot more control in this world; Buffy is on Walsh’s “vitamin” program and estranged from her mom and Giles, Xander is captured and turned by Angel, who the Initiative also got their hands on. Ethan is in town, running a brothel, and helps the men put things back to rights as much as is possible.



Judge's comment: Sexymermaid is made of awesomeness. She's the queen of hot smut and thrilling plots. The stories are often in a very AU-setting and I can't help admiring the risks she has taken with some of her stories and the research she must've put behind them. Besides, who else could write a fairy!Spike and make the story believable?





Nominated for: Sexymermaid has gotten some negative feedback / kerfuffles. It didn't stop her at all. Being admirable, wonderful and awesome. Everything she does is first class: writing, feedback, encouraging, giving out gifts.

Judges comment: All the nominees were upstoppable in their own right, but the one person that stood out for me was sexymermaid. She has been the recipient of some less then pleasant feedback and she is still here. She is always true to herself and writes what she wants to write. She is truly admirable and I hope she will continue to write. And no matter what she is writing I'll be there and so will all her many friends and fans.

































Judge's Comments: "Sexymermaid is uniquely gifted in her ability to write any pairing which one can come up with. Whether you ship Spuffy, Spawn, Spander, Spangel, Xangel(us), or whatever, she can meet that desire with an outstanding fic for any of them. Her ability to shape alternate realities and her own unique universes are amazing as is her compelling writing style that sucks you into her vibrant world. No matter your taste, pairing, universe craving – she will provide you with a scrumptiously wonderful read every time and for these reasons she is our best author."













Judge's comment: This creepy and suspenseful AU by sexymermaid features Will and Liam falling in love in rural Washington State while an unknown creature is preying on the townspeople. As usual, sexy's story has many more layers than just the Spangel love, and it is a treat to read all of them.







Judge's comment: Great story, the setting captured hearts, as did the relationship between Liam and Will. Excellent from first to last.
